What: A quick 3-4 sentence summary of what we did in Science class that day.
Who: Each student; the summary can include feelings and whether you liked the activity or not. Always put a reason for why you liked or disliked something!
How: This is very informal writing- I suggest imagining you are writing a note to a friend who was absent and wanted to know "what happened in class today?"
Where: On a piece of notebook paper, filed under the "Daily Summaries" tab. You can fit an entire weeks summaries on one paper; front and back.
When: Every night except Friday night (exceptions will be noted). In a normal 5 day week there will be 4 summaries. Summaries are either checked or collected on Fridays.
How is it graded?: A weeks worth of daily summaries should add up to 100 points.
- 5 day week= 4 summaries = 25 points each = 100 points total
- 4 day week =3 summaries = 33.33 points each = 100 points total
- 3 day week = no daily summaries for the week.
Why?: Reflection is an important part of Science. "Reflection helps students make connections, understand their successes and failures, and become aware of their learning. Reflections help teachers identify where different students are in their learning process." (Showalte, R. 2018)
The daily summary is a reflection that helps students build their meta-cognition. Right now we are completing a very informal reflection but the goal is to design more sophisticated reflections as the year progresses.
